Defense Score Goals, Record 2-0 Shutout Versus CMS

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — Cal Lutheran women's soccer took on Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in a conference matchup on Wednesday night. The Regals came out on top with a final score of 2-0. 

The second half started out on a high note with a free kick that resulted in the first goal. On a set piece, Katie Weaver sent a ball to the upper left corner and Cal Lutheran had the lead in the 48th minute. The second goal of the night came from Avery West as she scored six minutes later.

Jalynne Magana, Janelle Gutierrez and Ashley Escamilla each added a shot on goal, showing the offensive dominance that the Violet and Gold held throughout the night. Goalkeeper Logan DuFord tallied three saves, allowing the Regals to add their fourth shutout of the season. 

The first half consisted of a lot of possession on the Regals side. The Stags had one shot on goal, to the Regals five, in the first 45 minutes of play. At the end of the game, the shot count was 14-10 in favor of the Regals. Cal Lutheran had a total of five shots on goal and held CMS to three.

Ryan Kaneko and Izzy Martinez both had late goal attempts in the first half but couldn't capitalize. The Cal Lutheran defense stood its ground the entire game and was able to keep CMS from advancing down the field.  

Cal Lutheran women's soccer continues the season at home and has Senior Day at William Rolland Stadium on Sunday at 2 p.m. The Regals play host to La Verne.
