CMS Scores Late as Regals Fall 2-1 in SCIAC Semis

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — Claremont-Mudd-Scripps scored the go-ahead goal with five minutes remaining and defeated Cal Lutheran women's soccer 2-1 in the SCIAC Tournament semifinals on Wednesday night. 

This Regals fell to 9-5-5 and await a tough decision from a committee for an at-large berth to the NCAA Tournament. The selection show is set for Monday. 

Both defenses held strong in the first half as the game remained scoreless after 45 minutes. CMS took five shots, with three being on goal. Cal Lutheran's Logan Duford saved them all, not letting anything past her. The Regals' offense also fought hard as they had a total of three shots, just missing on their opportunities.

Both teams came into the second half reinvigorated. Early in the second half, CMS sank a ball into Cal Lutheran's net, scoring the first point of the game. The Regals didn't let the shot go unanswered as Isabella Veljacic answered less than a minute later. 

The equalizer from the SCIAC Offensive Player of the Year sparked the Regals, which continued to have shots and chances, but could not take the lead. 

With the game tied, both teams were itching to make the difference. Cal Lutheran took three more shots, but every single one was blocked. Danielle Vis, Ally Fisicaro and Veljacic each had a shot on goal for the Regals. 

Claremont-Mudd-Scripps had nine shots on goal, and Duford kept her team in the game as she came up with seven saves. The final goal came late as the Athenas scored in the 85th minute. The Regals tried to bounce back, but were unable to recover.
