CLAREMONT, Calif. — Cal Lutheran men's basketball dropped its regular season finale to Pomona-Pitzer 75-67 on Saturday night. This loss brings their overall record to 11-13 and their conference record to 8-8.
The Kingsmen had 26 points in the paint and 19 points off turnovers. Cal Lutheran committed just six turnovers, forcing Pomona-Pitzer into 12. However, the diference in the game was shooting percentage. The Sagehens were 50-percent from the field and the Kingsmen were 39.1.
Leading the offensive charge was Desi Burrage with 17 points and eight rebounds. Devon Lewis was next with 11 points and Tommy Griffitts and Logan McCullough had 10 each. Riley O'Connor had four assists and Brock Susko had three steals.
The Kingsmen opened the first half with a layup by Burrage, 2-0. The Kingsmen tried to continue their momentum, but the Sagehens quickly matched them 6-6. Cal Lutheran tried to keep up, but Pomona-Pitzer pulled ahead into an early lead, 11-8. The Kingsmen didn't stay down for long, as they overtook the Sagehens 22-13.
The Sagehens refused to stay down as they began to make a comeback, 22-19. The Kingsmen continued to climb as the Sagehens stayed right behind them, 28-23. Pomona-Pitzer managed to tie the game once more, 28-28, before taking the lead. The game remained close as the Sagehens were up 35-33 at the half..
The Kingsmen returned reinvigorated as they tied the game to start the second half. The Sagehens didn't let it hold for long as they pulled ahead 42-35. The Kingsmen tried to close the distance, but couldn't keep up as Pomona-Pitzer led 47-43. The Kingsmen fought all the way back managed to taking the lead 50-47.
The Sagehens tied the game once more, 50-50, before overcoming the Kingsmen 53-51. The Sagehens managed to pull away from the Kingsmen at the end, going up 66-60. Despite the Kingsmen's efforts, they fell to the Sagehens.
Cal Lutheran advances to the SCIAC Tournament. It starts on Friday and more information will be provided.
