LA VERNE, Calif. — Five Kingsmen score double-digits as Cal Lutheran men's basketball downed La Verne 99-76 on Wednesday night.
With three games left in the regular season, the Kingsmen sit in the fourth spot and are a few wins way from clinching a spot in the SCIAC Postseason Tournament. Cal Lutheran is 7-6 in SCIAC play and Occidental is fifth at 5-7.
Devon Lewis led the way for the Kingsmen and scored 21 points with an efficient 9-14 from the field. Tommy Griffitts was next with 18 and Ze'ev Remer added 13 more. Riley O'Connor and Jake Martin came off the bench and scored 12 and 11, respectively. Griffitts had a team-high eight rebounds and Lewis had the most steals with three.
The Cal Lutheran defense was on point and forced La Verne into 16 turnovers while only committing eight. The Kingsmen scored 20 points off turnovers while the Leopards had just five. The Kingsmen won the game in the paint and outscored the Leopards 52-34.
It was all Kingsmen early on as they jumped out to a 29-15 lead just nine minutes into the game. La Verne slowly chipped away at the lead over the rest of the half as the Kingsmen only led 50-43 at the break.
The Kingsmen opened the second half just like they did in the first and with 7:47 left in the game, Cal Lutheran had a commanding 83-56 lead. The Kingsmen never looked back and pick up a much needed win.
Cal Lutheran will look to make it two wins in a row on Saturday. The Kingsmen host Senior Day and welcome Chapman to Gilbert Arena with tip-off set for 7 p.m..
