THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — Cal Lutheran men's basketball swept its competition at the Kingsmen Classic and took down the Luther Norse 64-51 on Thursday night.
A day after handing Concordia Chicago its first loss of the season, the defense came out in full force as the Kingsmen recorded their season-low for points allowed. With the win, Cal Lutheran improved to 5-5.
Tommy Griffitts recorded a team-high 14 points and Devon Lewis and Brock Susko added 13 points each. Griffitts had a team-high six rebounds and Desi Burrage dished out a team-high five assists.
The Kingsmen shot 46.7-percent from three while holding the Norse to 26.3. Cal Lutheran had just 10 turnovers compared to Luther's 15 and scored 15 points off those turnovers. The Kingsmen scored 18 points in the paint and had 15 bench points.
With the score tied at 10, Cal Lutheran used a 9-0 run to put breathing room between themselves and Luther. The Norse slowly chipped away at the lead and the Kingsmen only led 31-27 at the half.
Every time the Norse would close the gap in the second half, the Kingsmen would answer with a big play. Ryan Grande and Jake Martin hit back-to-back three-pointers to put Cal Lutheran up 44-37 with 11:45 to go.
The big plays continued as Susko, Miles Griffin, Ze'ev Remer all had a chance at three-point plays. Two of the three made their free throws and the Kingsmen had a 56-43 lead with 6:57 left in the game. The Kingsmen never looked back and swept their Midwest competition
The Kingsmen jump back into conference play for their next game. Cal Lutheran will host Pomona-Pitzer on Saturday, New Year's Eve, at 7 p.m. It is the second game of a doubleheader with the women's basketball team taking on the Sagehens at 5.
