Kingsmen Battle Pomona-Pitzer, Outlasted 73-63

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — Cal Lutheran men's basketball battled, but was outlasted by Pomona Pitzer 73-63 on Saturday night.

The loss breaks the Kingsmen's winning streak and brings their record to 5-6 and 2-1 in conference.

Devon Lewis led the Kingsmen with 16, Tommy Griffitts and Brock Susko were next with 11 each and Desi Burrage had 10. Griffitts, Susko and Riley O'Connor had five rebounds each, Lewis, Burrage and Stephen Davis had three assists each and Burrage had four steals.

Cal Lutheran opened the first half strong as Griffitts led with a layup. He was followed by Jake Martin and Lewis as the three of them combined to raise their lead to 8-0. Pomona-Pitzer retaliated by scoring four of their own points, but Cal Lutheran carried their momentum undisturbed as Susko made a three-point shot.

Both teams found themselves in a standstill as both defenses held strong. The Kingsmen and Sagehens then traded shots before hitting another standstill, which was broken by Burrage and his three-point shot. This brought Cal Lutheran's lead to 24-14. Pomona-Pitzer began to find their momentum as the Sagehens score moved up, as Cal Lutheran held the 34-31 lead at the half.

Cal Lutheran returned in the second half determined to increase their lead as Lewis opened with a layup. The Sagehens quickly retaliated as they took the lead 37-36. Susko interrupted the Sagehens momentum with a layup and a 3-point jump shot, but Pomona-Pitzer managed to score once more. O'Connor followed with his own jump shot, but the Sagehens had scored again. Soon after, Griffitts retaliated, bringing the score to 44-41. The Sagehens answered by taking the lead from Cal Lutheran with a score of 45-44. Both teams continued to trade shots back and forth as Cal Lutheran went up 56-51. Pomona-Pitzer then went on a relentless attack, leaving the Kingsmen defense straining as the score widened to 64-56. The teams traded baskets the reat of the way as Cal Lutheran lost to Pomona-Pitzer.

The Kingsmen's next game will be against Occidental on Wednesday, Jan. 4, at 7 p.m.
