Big Second Half Propels Occidental Past Men’s Basketball

LOS ANGELES —  Cal Lutheran men's basketball gave up 52 points in the second half and fell to Occidental 83-77 on Wednesday night. With the loss, Cal Lutheran is 9-10 overall and 6-5 in conference.
 
The Kingsmen currently sit in the fourth spot for conference with five games to go. The Tigers are one game back as both teams are fighting for the final spot in the conference tournament. 

Stephen Davis led the way with 22 points off the bench, making all 11 of his free throws. Tommy Griffitts, Devon Lewis and Ze'ev Remer each added double-digit points. Griffitts had 13 points and five rebounds, Lewis had 12 points and seven rebounds and Remer had 12 points. 

The Tigers took advantage of the game at the three-point arc. Occidental shot 50-percent from three-point range while Cal Lutheran was at 20-percent. 

The Kingsmen started a slow, but were able to get things going, and were able to pull ahead as they took a 23-14 lead.  The Tigers were quick to bounce back as they began to make a comeback, but it wasn't enough as the Kingsmen continued to hold them down 31-19. Both defenses held strong for two minutes after, before the Tigers broke through and scored. The Tigers slowly closed the gap and the Kingsmen only had a 36-31 lead at the break.

The Tigers returned determined to win as they took the lead from the Kingsmen, 37-36, early in the second half. The Kingsmen tried to stay right with them, but the Tigers pulled away further, making the score 67-58. Slowly the Kingsmen found their momentum and began to close the distance making the score 74-69. In the end, it wasn't enough as the Kingsmen narrowly fell to the Tigers.

The Kingsmen's next game is against Caltech on Saturday at 4 p.m.
