CLAREMONT, Calif. — Cal Lutheran men's basketball held its own, but fell to No. 18 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 74-64 on Wednesday night.
The Kingsmen shot 47.2-percent from the field, but 23.8 from three as they fell to 4-2 in conference and 7-7 overall.
Tommy Griffitts and Brock Susko led the way with 14 points each. Devon Lewis was next with 10 and Desi Burrage added nine more. Griffitts led the team with six rebounds, Lewis and Susko both dished out four assists and Lewis had four steals.
There were four ties and 10 lead changes as the Kingsmen showed they can play with the top teams in the nation.
It was a low scoring first half as Griffitts made a layup to put the Kingsmen up 10-4 with 12:41 left in the half. The teams continued to exchange buckets before Martin drilled a three-pointer to put Cal Lutheran up 23-14 with 6:07 in the first. CMS slowly chipped away at the lead and Cal Lutheran was only up 29-26 at the break.
In the second half, The Stags completed a comeback and then some as they went up 49-44 with 11:23 left in the game. The Kingsmen responded with a run of their own, nine straight points, and took a 53-49 lead with 9:40 to go. Lewis nailed a three and then made a layup and Susko added two free throws and a dunk to cap off the run. CMS fought back and took the lead. With Cal Lutheran up 57-56, the Stags went on a 9-4 run and took a 65-61 lead with 6:20 to go. CMS continued to hold its lead and was up 67-62 with 3:38 left. The Stags held on and took the game.
The Kingsmen's next game is on the road. Cal Lutheran is at Redlands on Saturday at 7 p.m.
