THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — Cal Lutheran men's basketball could not hold on as the Chpman Panthers escaped with a 75-74 win on Saturday night.
The Kingsmen celebrated their seniors before the game and honored Miles Houston and Logan McCullough. The loss brings the Kingsmen's overall record to 10-12 and their conference record to 7-7.
Five Kingsmen scored in double-figures and Ze'ev Remer had the most points with 17. Brock Susko was next with 12, Devon Lewis added 11 and Desi Burrage and Tommy Griffitts had 10 each.
The Kingsmen opened the first half with a 3-point jump shot by Burrage. The Kingsmen and Panthers then traded baskets over the first part of the first half and the score was knotted up at 16-16. Cal Lutheran was able to create a little bit of breathing room and had a 36-32 lead at the break.
The Panthers returned in the second half reinvigorated as they quickly overtook the Kingsmen 38-36. Chapman kept their momentum going strong, but Cal Lutheran managed to tie the game, 44-44. Both teams traded shots back and forth before the Panthers pulled ahead again, 58-53. Shots came fewer as both team's defenses held strong. The Kingsmen did manage to tie the game once more, 62-62.
Cal Lutheran tried to keep up, but the Panthers managed to take the lead once more, 68-62. The Kingsmen slowly closed in on Chapman, making the score 68-66. Cal Lutheran retook the lead as Remer hit a three-pointer with 3:40 to go.
The game continued to go back-and-forth and had 18 ties and 15 lead changes, Both teams refused to give up as the score was once again tied, this time at 72-72. In the end, the Panthers held on and defeated the Kingsmen.
The Kingsmen's next game will be against Whittier on Wednesday, Feb. 15, at 7 p.m.
