WHITTIER, Calif.— Cal Lutheran women's volleyball recorded its second lowest attack percentage of the season with .081 as the Whittier Poets shocked the Regals 18-25, 19-25, 21-25 Tuesday night.
Four Regals hit negative as CLU struggled with their attacks. Cal Lutheran hit -.029 in the first set, .132 in the second and .128 in the third as the Regals dropped to 6-5 in the SCIAC and 12-10 overall.
The attack percentage made it hard on the Regals, but they did keep the sets close thanks to their great play at the net. Morgan Given and Christina Williams both recorded six total blocks. Williams had a solo and five block assists while Given had all assisted.
Libero Carly Rose Howard racked up double-digit digs for the 17th time this season. She tallied 12 in the game, making it her third straight game with 10-plus. She added three assists and two service aces.
The Regals kept the first set close, but Whittier pulled away in the second half. With CLU down 14-11, WC scored five of the next six points, putting distance in between, and grabbed the first set 25-18. Whitter pulled off a similar run in the second set, just over halfway through. The score was knotted up at 17 and the Poets used a 5-0 to take the lead and then claimed the set 25-19. Whittier carried that momentum into the third set, and were down 16-15, but used a 7-1 run to take a 22-17 lead and eventually won the set and swept the Regals.
With five games left in the regular season, the Regals return home. Cal Lutheran has a shot at revenge against Chapman on Friday at 7 p.m.
