High Scoring Sets Continue as Regals Fall to Leopards

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif.— Mackenzie Martinez recorded 10 kills and 12 digs for her second double-double of the year, but a .135 attack percentage was Cal Lutheran's downfall as Regals volleyball was defeated 3-1 by the La Verne Leopards. Scores of the match were 25-20, 21-25, 22-25, 22-25. 

The Regals did not hit any higher then .167 in any set as they dropped their second straight SCIAC match and are now 3-2 in conference and 9-7 overall. The Leopards hit with a percentage of .213 and recorded a .318 in the fourth set as they closed the door on CLU.

After Martinez, Sarah Hein and Samantha Landrum both had eight kills and Maci Haddad was next with seven. Jenna Jones was in the setter position and posted a stat line of 24 assists, five digs, two aces and one kill. 

Defensively, Carly Rose Howard led the team with 16 digs and Hein was right behind her with 15. Christina Williams was big at the net with four blocks, Morgan Given was next with three and Hein and Landrum had two apiece. 

The Regals jumped out to a huge lead in the first set and were up 9-1. Hein, Given and Martinez all swatted down a kill, Haddad and Given combined for a block and Hein served an ace. CLU continued to pour it on and doubled up the Leopards at 20-10. ULV fought back and closed the gap as Cal Lutheran took the first set 25-20. 

Cal Lutheran scored 20-plus points in every set for the second straight match, as they lost the second and third sets 21-25 and 22-25, respectively. In the fourth set, it was the Leopards that had the early lead and were up 14-8. The Regals fought back, eventually make it a one-point game, and only trailed 19-18. The teams went back-and-forth over the next plays as ULV still had the lead at 23-22. The Leopards hung on the rest of the way and won the set 25-22 and the match 3-1. 

The Regals return home for the next conference match and host Whittier on Friday at 7 p.m.
