Panthers Escape With Five-Set Win Over Regals

ORANGE, Calif.— Cal Lutheran women's volleyball jumped out to a 2-0 match lead against Chapman, but the Panthers responded by taking the final three sets and won the match on Saturday night. Scores of the match were 25-19, 25-21, 20-25, 16-25, 11-15. 

The loss drops the Regals to 10-8 overall and 4-3 in SCIAC play. Chapman won its 12th match in a row and improved to 13-2 overall and is undefeated in SCIAC at 7-0.

In the first set, the Regals jumped out to a 6-1 lead as Mackenzie Martinez and Sarah Hein connected on kills and Julia Trento Served an ace. The runs were a theme of the first set as Chapman answered with a 11-1 run and took a 12-7 lead. CLU fired back with seven straight points and regained the lead capped off by a Morgan Given and Christina Williams block. The teams went back-and-forth over the next plays and the score was eventually tied at 18. The set ended with a 7-1 run as the Regals claimed the first set 25-19. Given, Haddad, Hein, and Samantha Landrum all recorded a kill and Jennifer Kent served an ace to help CLU take set one.

The Regals took the early lead in the second set and were up 12-8 after a block by Given and Haddad. CLU kept the points coming and used a 4-0 stretch to take a 17-11 lead. The Panthers made it close down the stretch but the Regals did not give up the lead and Haddad swatted down the final kill to give the Violet and Gold the 25-21 win and a 2-0 match lead. 

Chapman responded in the third and fourth sets winning 25-20 and 25-16, respectively, and forced a fifth set. With the fifth set tied at 3, the Panthers used a 9-3 run and took a big 12-6 lead. The Regals fought back, cutting the lead to 12-10, but the Panthers won the set 15-11 and the match.

Hein, Martinez, Kent and Jenna Jones all recorded a double-double. Hein led the team with 13 kills and added 19 digs, Martinez tallied 12 kills and 10 digs, Kent added 31 assists and 10 digs while Jones had 14 assists and 10 digs.

Haddad was the third Regal with double-digit kills and had 11 while leading the team with five blocks. Given and Williams helped Haddad at the net with four and three blocks, respectively, and Carly Rose Howard recorded a team-high 22 digs. 

Up next for Cal Lutheran is Caltech as the Regals welcome the Beavers to Gilbert Arena on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
