Regals Sweep Beavers; Given, Haddad Lead the Way With 8 Kills Each

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — Morgan Given and Maci Haddad tallied eight kills each and the Cal Lutheran women's volleyball team swept the Caltech Beavers 25-19, 25-19, 25-20 on Tuesday night.

Halfway through conference play, the Regals currently sit in the fourth spot and are 5-3 in the SCIAC. CLU is now 11-8 on the season and have swept six matches.

Given and Haddad led a balanced attack as Samantha Landrum was next with seven kills, Christina Williams recorded six, Mackenzie Martinez tallied five and Sarah Hein chipped in with three. 

Keeping the offense moving was the setters,Jennifer Kent and Jenna Jones. Kent dished out 23 assists and added three digs and one ace, block and kill. Jones showed an all-around game as well with three digs, two aces and one kill. Hein and Julia Trento matched Jones with two aces.

Defensively, Williams was a key piece at the net and sent back three blocks while Haddad added two, one of which was solo. Martinez was the only Regal with double-digit digs and put up 12. Carly Rose Howard kept the digs coming with nine, Given added seven and Trento added six more. 

In a match that took just one hour and 15 minutes, the Beavers kept it close. With CIT up 6-3 in the first set, Cal Lutheran used 5-0 run and took the lead. Given and Williams both recorded a kill, the duo combined for a block and Kent capped off the run with an ace. The Beavers tied the set up 11, as CLU answered with another run and took a 15-11 lead. The Regaks kept the distance the rest of the way and took the first set 25-19. 

The Violet and Gold carried the momentum into the first set and opened with a 5-0 run. That run set the tone for the match and the Regals won the second set 25-19 and had a 2-0 match lead. With Cal Lutheran up 11-10 in the third set, the Regals used a 6-0 run and snagged a 17-10 lead. Landrum recorded three kills during the run, Trento served two aces and Trento added an ace. That was the space the Regals needed as they won the third set 25-20 and swept the Beavers.

Up next for the Regals is the Athenas from Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. CLU has a week off before traveling to CMS for a match at 7 p.m.
