Kingsmen Move to 6-0; Take Down UC Santa Cruz 80-62

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. — California Lutheran University student-athletes Jacob Alonzo, Ryan Grande and Mason Johnson combined for 49 points as Kingsmen basketball defeated UC Santa Cruz 80-62 on Saturday afternoon. 

The Purple and Gold kept their undefeated season going, winning their sixth straight game and is off to a hot start. The Kingsmen are outscoring their opponents 84.3 points per game to 68.3. 

Johnson led the way, going 7-11 from the field, totaling 19 points, to go along with four steals, two assists and two rebounds.

Alonzo and Grande were lethal from behind the arc, knocking down seven threes between them, with 16 and 14 points, respectively. 

Alonzo put up 16 points, 3-4 from three, with five assists and four rebounds, while Grande hit 4-5 threes, tallying 14 points in just 21 minutes. 

Devon Lewis came off the bench and was the fourth Kingsmen in double-figures. He put up 10 points with four assists and three steals.

The Purple and Gold were efficient, shooting 45.8-percent from the field (27-59) and 50.0 from three (11-22).

Cal Lutheran recorded 12 points off turnovers, 21 points from the bench and 22 in the paint.  

The Kingsmen controlled the game from start to finish. CLU opened with a 14-0 run and had an early 26-8 lead 10 minutes into the game. 

The Purple and Gold never looked back, going up 37-23 at the half, and coasted to another big win. 

Cal Lutheran is back home for its next contest. The Kingsmen host Occidental on Wednesday at 7 p.m. in their conference opener.
