Sagehens Outlast Kingsmen

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — The Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens outlasted California Lutheran University men's basketball 87-72 on Monday night. 

The loss drops the Kingsmen to 2-3 in Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) play and 9-4 overall.

The Kingsmen had three starters in double-digits as Jacob Alonzo recorded 15 points, Tommy Griffits had 14 and Brooks Mallory added 12 more. 

Alonzo dished a team-high eight assists and made four steals to add to his line. Griffitts was 5-6 from the field and made all four free throws, while Mallory drilled four three-pointers. 

Devon Lewis came off the bench with eight points, hitting two three pointers, and Mason Johnson had eight points, seven assists, five rebounds and three steals. 

After the Sagehens went up 17-12 to start the game, Cal Lutheran responded and tied the game at 24 with 4:44 to play in the half. The teams exchanged buckets the rest of the way and Alonzo hit a three-pointer with 37 seconds left to give Cal Lutheran a 32-31 lead at the half. 

With the score tied at 44 with 14:20 left in the game, Pomona-Pitzer went on a 20-10 run and had a 64-54 lead with 7:25 remaining. Every single time the Kingsmen would chip away at the lead, the Sagehens would hit a big shot. Cal Lutheran could not close the gap as the Sagehens picked up the road win. 

The Sagehens were 66.7-percent (18-27) from three-point range, while the Kingsmen shot 47.8 (11-23). 

Cal Lutheran gets back on the road for its next game and will be at Caltech on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
