Stags Even Season Series with Kingsmen

CLAREMONT, Calif. — California Lutheran University men's basketball came up short on the road and fell to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 80-70 on Wednesday night.

The Kingsmen dropped to 15-6 overall and 8-6 in Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) play. Even with the loss, the Kingsmen still sit in the four-spot of the conference standings.

Mason Johnson had a game-high 22 points, but missed all five of his three-pointers. He also led the team with nine rebounds and five assists.

Jacob Alonzo was next with 15 points, and added three rebounds and three assists. The duo had a rough game from three as Alonzo missed all three of his chances.

The Stags out shot with Kingsmen 53.6-percent to 41.7 from the field and 33.3 to 20.0 from three. CMS recorded 21 assists to Cal Lutheran's 12 and only had six turnovers while the Kingsmen had 10.

Even though CMS controlled almost all of the statistical categories, they were in the gamer from the start to the finish.

The biggest lead for the Stags in the first half was only four points, which they did multiple times. The Kingsmen did not give up and kept coming.

Cal Lutheran would tie the game at 61, as the second half continued to be just as close as the first. The Kingsmen could never get over the hump though and CMS answered with six straight points. It was that run which put the Kigsmen away and the Stags earned a hard-fought victory.

The Kingsmen end the regular season on the road. Cal Lutheran is at Chapman on Saturday at 2 p.m.
