Kingsmen Head to Redlands for SCIAC Championships

REDLANDS, Calif. - The Cal Lutheran men's track and field team heads to Ashel Cunningham Track this weekend, April 27-28, for the 2018 SCIAC Track & Field Championships hosted by Chapman University. Events kick off at 4 p.m. PST both days.

The Kingsmen enter the meet in seventh place with two points after three SCIAC Multi-Dual Meets, but have the opportunity to earn up to ten points per event at the championship meet. 

The meet will be scored 10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1- for all events. Nine athletes will advance to the finals in all field events and track events 800m and under. Twelve runners will race in the finals of the 1500m. 

Obasi Dees and Timmy Kahovec led the Kingsmen in the first SCIAC Multi-Dual at Redlands on March 3, as the team notched eight runner-up finishes.  Dees was second in the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.83 seconds and broke into the CLU record books tied for the ninth best time in school history. He also placed second in the 200-meter dash with 22.03. Kahovec was the runner-up in the 800- and 1,500-meter run. He clocked in at 1:56.87 in the 800-meter run and at 4:07.01 in the 1500. 

Rigoberto Baza Carillo, Anthony Flores and Dallas Knapp were also the runner-up in their respective events. Baza Carillo finished at 16:07.95 in the 5,000-meter run, Knapp clocked a time of 50.10 in the 400m dash, and Flores recorded 38.90 meters in the hammer throw. For relays, the team of Chris Brodnax, Dees, Knapp and Wendell O'Brien finished second with a time of 42.91. 

Also in the top three, Connor Neufeld-Griffin finished right behind Kahovec at third in the 800m at 1:59.83, and Dillon Brown was third in the long jump with 6.29 meters and third in the triple jump with 13.40 meters.

In the second SCIAC Multi-Dual, the men took home three titles – two by Dees and another by Knapp. Dees claimed the 100m at 11.00 seconds flat and the 200m with a 22.27. Knapp followed him up with a 50.31 second run for the 400m title. Neufeld-Griffin was second in the 800-meter run (1:57.03) and Flores took third in the hammer throw (38.04 meters). 

Wrapping up the trio of multi-duals, Kahovec led CLU with the event title as he finished the 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:02.28. He then turned around and placed second in the 800-meter run with 1:56.53.

Seven other Kingsmen also finished in the top five. Brodnax was third in the 400-meter run (50.03). He was also fifth in the high jump with a height of 1.80 meters. Baza Carillo, Flores, and Nikita Khromets all placed fourth. Carillo competed in the 1,500-meter run (4:14.60), Khromets ran the 5,000-meter (17:02.04) and Flores was fourth in the hammer throw (36.43). Zachary Sergey was fifth in the 5,000-meter run (17:17.71), Henry Friederichs was fifth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (10:32.41) and Corey Lee was fifth in the triple jump (10.82 meters).
