Caya Wins Three Events at SCIAC Multi-Dual #1; Regals Defeat Oxy for First Time Since 2014

PASADENA, Calif. — Jolie Caya won three events while Sarah Bjornson, Samira Negrete and Zaria Opara each had one to lead California Lutheran University women's track and field at SCIAC Multi-Dual #1 on Saturday afternoon. 

The Regals faced off against Caltech and Occidental and swept their competition. They defeated Caltech 118-28 and Occidental 101-56. It is the first time since 2014 the Regals defeated Occidental. 

Caya won the long jump, 100-meter hurdles and 400-meter hurdles. In the field event, she cleared a distance of 4.69 meters to claim gold. In hurdles, she recorded times of 16.13 seconds and 1:13.33, respectively. 

Bjornson took the high jump as she got up and over the height of 1.50 meters. Her 2.77 meters mark in the pole vault, was a new personal best and 10th in the record book, made her runner-up on the day. She was also second in the 100-meter hurdles with 17.45.

Negrete won her event as she finished with 2:22.16 in the 800-meter run. She bested the competition by as full six seconds.

Opara won the hammer throw with a mark of 42.14 meters. It was a new personal best as she bettered her mark in the 10th spot in the program record book. She was also second in the shot put with 10.06 meters and the third in the discus with 32.64.  

Taking silver on the day was Claire Caldera in the javelin (28.73m), as she just missed etching her name in the record book. Joining her on the podium in second was McKenzie Gerken in the discus (32.84 meters), Fatima Cervantes in the high jump (1.45 meters) and Veronica Redpath in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (11:57.43). Redpath's time was a personal best and fourth in program history. 

The Regals had two relay teams take second. Caya, Jasmyne Santamaria Holliday, Hannah Sewall and Samantha Carranza had a time of 52.36 in the 400-meter relay while Sewall, Caya, Negrete and Courtney Fukuda combined for 4:30.22 in the 1,600 relay

The Purple and Gold also added four third-place finishes. Cervantes was third in the long jump (4.02m), triple jump (9.38m) and the 400-meter hurdles (13.51) and Carranza was third in the 100-meter dash (13.51). 

The Regals are back in action next Saturday, March 12, at the Occidental Distance Carnival.
