Opara, 4x400 Relay Win at SCIAC Multi-Dual #3; Bjornson, Negrete Make All-Time List

CLAREMONT, Calif. — California Lutheran University women's track and field competed in its third conference event of the season at the SCIAC Multi-Dual #3 on Saturday. Pomona-Pitzer hosted the event as the Regals competed against Pomona-Pitzer, Redlands and Whittier.

The Regals won one relay events and Zaria Opara took one individual event. The team of Hannah Sewall, Veronica Redpath, Samira Negrete and Cassidy Fukuda won the 4x400 relay with a fast time of four minutes and 14.71 seconds. 

Opara had her win in the hammer and bested the competition with 44.27 meters. Opara continued to shine in throwing events and was the runner-up in the shot put with 10.87 meters. 

The Regals placed second in three events. Sarah Bjornson took silver in two and Sewall added one more. Bjornson cleared a height in 3.20 meters in the pole vault, moving her up to sixth on the Cal Lutheran all-time list. Bjornson also had a distance of 1.50 meters in the high jump and Sewall had a time of 1:09.25 in the 400 meter hurdles. 

Jolie Caya, McKenzie Gerken and Samira Negrete both took bronze for the Purple and Gold. Caya finished with a time of 15.61 in the 100 meter hurdles, Gerken recorded 35.26 meters in the discus and Negrete had 2:22.18 in the 800 meter run. 

Four Regals placed fourth in their events as Cal Lutheran kept piling up the points. Claire Caldera threw a distance of 29.91 meters in the javelin, Caya had a length of 4.96 meters in the long jump, Cox had 10.03 meters in the triple jump and Negrete had a time of 4:51.34 in the 1500 meter run. Negrete's time placed her 10th in the all-time list. The 4x100 relay team also took fourth as Caya, Jasmyne Santamaria Holliday, Sewall and Cox combined for 51.36. 

Rounding out the top Cal Lutheran finishers was Fukuda in the 400 meter dash (sixth, 1:05.88), Santamaria Holliday in the 100 meter dash (seventh, 12.98) and Fukuda in the 200 meter dash (13th, 28.58). 

Cal Lutheran was barely defeated by Whittier 79-71 and Pomona-Pitzer 80-76 and then lost to Redlands 114-42. 

The Regals continue the season at the SCIAC Championships. The meet is scheduled for April 30 and May 1.
