Regals Claim 11 Events at Moorpark College Open

MOORPARK, Calif. — California Lutheran University women's track & field impressed in their first outing in 2022, winning 11 events at the Moorpark College Open on Friday.

Sarah Bjornson, Jolie Caya and Zaria Opara all claimed two events as the Regals started their 2022 campaign with authority.

Bjornson won the high jump with 1.50 meters and the pole vault as she cleared 2.25m. Caya won both of her running events. She claimed the 60-meter hurdles as she crossed the finish line with 9.61 and the 300-meter hurdles with 52.34. Opara won two of the throwing events as she took the shot put with 10.73m and the discus with 34.57.

Four Regals added to the gold stockpile. In their first collegiate meet, Claire Caldera, Lexi Cox and Samira Negrete all finished first. Caldera won the javelin with 30.46m, Cox claimed the triple jump with 9.68m and Negrete crossed the finish line first in the 1-mile run with 5:38.01.

Veronica Redpath made it 10 individual wins for the Regals as she took the 3,000-meter run with 11:10.79. Hannah Sewall, Cox, Cassidy Fukuda and Samantha Carranza then claimed the 4x100 meter relay with 55.29.

Three Regals and one relay team had runner-up finishes. Caya was second in the long jump with 4.67m, McKenzie Gerken placed second in the shot put with 9.68m and Opara was second with 37.35m. In the 4x400 meter relay, Caya, Fukuda, Carranza and Cox were second with 4:40.62.

Fatima Cervantes placed third three times and Jasmyne Santamaria Holliday was third once. Cervantes had a time of 58.37 in the 300-meter hurdles, cleared 1.40m in the high jump and recorded 4.23m in the long jump while Sanatmaria Holliday had time of 28.36 in the 200-meter dash.

The Regals continue the season with the Pomona-Pitzer Collegiate All-Comers on Feb. 19 at 10:30 a.m.
