Bjornson Runner-Up, Caya Third on Day Two of SCIAC Championships; Caya, Caldera Break Into Top-10

WHITTIER, Calif. — Sarah Bjornson was runner-up in the high jump and Jolie Caya was third in the 100 meter hurdles as California Lutheran University finished fourth at the 2022 Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Track and Field Championships. Whittier hosted the event which was held Saturday and Sunday. 

The Regals finished with 71.5 points and placed in the top-four for the second straight year. Cal Lutheran was the runner-up last year. The Regals placed top-four in back-to-back years for the first time since 2013 and '14. 

Bjornson cleared 1.52 meters as she tied for second in the high jump. Caya made it two Regals on the podium and turned in the third-fastest time in program history. She clocked 15.18 seconds in the 100m hurdles. 

The Regals scored points in nine more events. Zaria Opara just missed the podium as she placed fourth in the shot put with 11.20 meters. 

Competing in her first SCIAC Championships, Claire Caldera finished top-five and broke into Cal Lutheran's top-10 list. Caldera was fifth in the javelin with 31.72 meters, which is the eighth in program history. 

The 4x100 meter relay team and Hannah Sewall were also fifth. The relay team of Caya, Jasmyne Santamaria Holliday, Cassidy Fukuda and Sewall clocked a time of 51.17 and Sewall finished with 1:09.41 in the 400 meter hurdles. 

Bjornson scored points in one more event as she placed sixth in the pole vault. She cleared a height of 3.07 meters. 

Cal Lutheran finished seventh in four events. Fatima Cervantes cleared 1.47m in the high jump, Samira Negrete clocked a time of 2:20.50 in the 800m, Veronica Redpath finished with 18:38.51 in the 5000m and the team of Sewall, Negrete, Santamaria Holliday and Fukuda had 4:13.90 in the 4x400 relay. 

Cervantes added more points to the total as she finished eighth in the 400m hurdles with 1:13.50. Another top finisher for the Regals was Lexi Cox in the triple jump with 9.51 meters. 

The Kingsmen have more chance to qualify for the NCAA Championships. Cal Lutheran is at the Occidental Invite on Saturday at 11 a.m.
