Regals Collect 7 Top Ten Finishes, Opara Takes Top Spot in Hammer Throw

LOS ANGELES, Calif. — California Lutheran University sent seven competitors to the 2022 Occidental Invitational.

The Regals' effort was led by junior Zaria Opara who put on a display in which any one of her three successful attempts would have been enough to win the event. It proved to be her second that won the day at a distance of 47.76m.

The high jump had two Cal Lutheran competitors. Freshman Fatima Cervantes placed 8th in the event by clearing the starting height of 1.45m on her very first attempt. Sarah Bjornson, a sophomore, was able to do her one better by clearing 1.50m to reach a 6th place finish.

Bjornson also competed in the pole vault where her pressure packed third attempt at 3.10m was successful and enough to take 7th in the competition.

Finishing the field events for the Regals, sophomore long jumper Jolie Caya showed some resilience after two faults. She was able post a distance of 4.73m on her final attempt to move up to 8th in the event.

Caya also competed on the track, taking 7th place in the 100m hurdles with a time of 16.06.

Junior Jasmyne Santamaria Holliday's time of 12.95 seconds was good enough to claim 15th in the 100m.

Samira Negrete posted an 800m time of 2:22.69 and Samantha Redpath finished the 5000m with a time of 18:55.07.

The Regals will compete again on Wednesday the 18th at the Redlands Final Qualifier.
