THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — California Lutheran University softball started its 2022 season on Tuesday afternoon as the Regals hosted the Vanguard Loins at Hutton Field. On a windy day. the Lions took game one 10-0 in five innings and claimed game two 7-4 after it was called due to darkness. 

The Regals faced a tough NAIA opponent with six games already under their belt. Cal Lutheran gained experience for its roster, top to bottom.
 
The first RBI of the year came in the second game. After Mia Antonino got on with a walk, Regan Laubscher drove her in with a double to left center. The score was knotted up after two innings at 1-1. 

Mia Garcia saw her first collegiate action and looked good while making quick work of the Lion batters. Through 3.0 innings of work, she allowed just one hit and one earned run. 

The Regals took the first lead of the game in the bottom of the inning. Natalie Luna singled to lead off the inning and after wild pitches, she scored to give her team the lead. 

The Lions responded in the top of the fourth and the score was tied through four. After Vanguard took the lead in the top of the fifth, the Regals answered with two runs in their bottom half. 

Amanda Gull and Ariana Mendoza both recorded an RBI double in the inning, giving the Regals life and momentum, with the score knotted at 4-4. 

Vanguard broke the tie in the top of the sixth and scored three runs and took the game 7-4 after it was called due to darkness. 

In game one, Mia Onesto led the Regals, going 2-for-2 and drawing a walk. Alex Nyberg recorded one more hit as the Cal Lutheran bats were kept quiet. 

Taryn Faull started the game on the mound, but took the loss with 3.0 innings, five hits and three earned runs. Mia Antonio came on in relief and got her first collegiate action as she pitched two innings.  

The Regals are at home for the next five games. Cal Lutheran host Whitworth on Feb. 18 for a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
