Regals Win Final Two Games; Claim Series Against Whittier

WHITTIER, Calif. – Regals softball finished the 2022 season on the road with a double header against the Whittier Poets. After the Poets took game one of the series on Friday, the Regals regrouped to win Saturday's games 5-2 and 9-5. With that, Cal Lutheran claimed the final series of the season 2-1.

Game one saw the Regals strike early, loading the bases for catcher Hanna Booth who cleared them with a double to left field. Mia Onesto, Makayla Lopez, and Ashley Membrere all scored to put the Regals up 3-0 after the first inning.

Cal Lutheran would add a little more insurance in the fifth when Onesto scored again on a Whittier error. Ashley Membrere would score on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Ariana Mendoza.

A 5-0 lead was more than enough for starting pitcher Madison Gunn who pitched 6 scoreless inning before Whittier was able to bring two runs across in the bottom of the seventh. The Cal Lutheran Defense was able to stop them there to pick up the win 5-2.

The second game of the day and deciding game of the series began in similar fashion to the earlier game. Cal Lutheran again loaded the bases in the first inning. With Mendoza, Membrere, and Onesto on base short stop Emily Blank singled to left to bring in 2 runs.

In the top of the third Makayla Lopez scored on an error that allowed Ariana Mendoza to reach first as well.

Up 3-0 in the fourth, the Regals continued to push away when Mendoza again put the ball in play for a 2 RBI single that plated Membrere and Onesto.

Whittier was finally able to get to starting pitcher Madison Gunn in the bottom of the fourth to score one run.

Mendoza continued to be a force in the sixth when she doubled to right to drive in Membrere and Onesto and brought her total to 4 RBI in the game. The Regals' onslaught continued with Emily Blank driving in pinch runner Ally Macapagal to make the score 9-1.

The Poets scored two in the bottom of the sixth and added two more in the seventh, but it proved to be too little, too late. The Regals took the final game of the series and the season 9-5.
