Kingsmen Outpaced in Heavy Hitting Contest with Ottawa (AZ)

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — California Lutheran University men's volleyball hosted NAIA competitor Ottawa (AZ) in a losing effort on Friday night. Scores of the match were 20-25, 17-25, 14-25.

This loss moves the Kingsmen to 8-6 at the halfway point of the season.

It was hard hitting affair as the Kingsmen tried to go swing for swing with a very dynamic Ottawa team. Cal Lutheran hit well enough to average 10 kills per set, but the hitting percentage of .105 was not enough to compete with the Spirit's impressive .403 percentage.

In the first set, the Kingsmen were led by Ben Weber who had 6 kills in the set. The teams were tied at 14-14 when the Spirit were able to get an edge that they carried to 20-18. From there, Ottawa took 5 of the last 7 points for a 25-20 win.

Set two saw Sean Fitzpatrick lead the offense with 3 kills and Taylor Marks come up with 3 digs. Ottawa developed an early 8-3 lead and were able to hold that level through to the end, taking the set 25-17.

Fitzpatrick had another 4 kills in set three. The Spirit took started fast at 4-0, but the Kingsmen pushed back and closed the deficit to 9-7. Ottawa proceeded to take the next 7 points to take a firm grip on the game. The set closed at 25-14 to conclude a three set sweep for the Spirit of Ottawa University.

The Kingsmen were led on offense by Sean Fitzpatrick's 11 kills. Ben Weber also came away with 7 of Cal Lutheran's 30 kills on the match.

Eli Moore led the back row with 5 digs while Borys Horiuk led the team with 3 block assists.

The Kingsmen will be headed back out on the road to face the Gauchos of UC Santa Barbara on Thursday at 7 p.m.
