Kingsmen Upset No. 8 SUNY New Paltz to Wrap Up Slug Slam Invitational

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — California Lutheran University knocked off the No. 8 team in the country, SUNY New Paltz 3-1 on Saturday night as the Kingsmen wrapped up the UC Santa Cruz Slug Slam Invitational.

The Kingsmen went 1-1 om the day, defeating No. 8 New Platz 25-23, 25-18, 20-25, 25-15, but fell to NAIA opponent Menlo College 14, 25, 21-25, 11-25. 

It was a successful weekend for the Purple and Gold as they took down a top-10 team and defeated UC Santa Cruz for the first time in program history. 

Against No. 8 SUNY New Paltz, the Kingsmen hit .235 while holding the Hawks to .115. 

Jake Tucker and Dylan Schreibfeder led the way, both swatting down double-digit kills. Tucker recorded 11 kills, five digs and four blocks. Schreibfeder was on fire, tallying 10 kills and hitting with a .643 clip. 

Sean Fitzpatrick was next with nine kills and Borys Horiuk recorded seven with a .417 percentage. 

Seamus McDonagh was all over the court with 34 assists, seven digs, four kills and three blocks. McDonagh, Eli Moore and Logan Marks all had a team-high seven digs.  

The Kingsmen continue the season with their home opener. Cal Lutheran will go back-to-back against No. 8 SUNY New Paltz as the Hawks come to Gilbert Arena on Tuesday for a match at 7 p.m.
