Kingsmen Reach First SCIAC Victory Against Beavers

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif.— The Cal Lutheran Kingsmen started their final stretch of the season against the nationally ranked No. 21 Caltech at home this afternoon. The Kingsmen continued their now six-game win streak against the Beavers by winning, 5-4.

Beginning their conference matchup, freshman Aaron Moylan and Guillaume Ruaud, No. three doubles, started the day with a victory of 8-3 for the Kingsmen.

Senior Yahn Gawrit and sophomore Isaiah Volk, No. one doubles, added another win for their doubles streak by winning 8-7 (1). No. two doubles, senior Ransom Braaten and junior Jake Haffner, finished doubles play with a victory of 8-4.

Advancing on to singles matchups, Braaten, No. two singles, added a victory 6-2 and 6-0. 

Senior Michael Sulahian, No. six singles, fell 6-2 and 6-1. Gawrit, No. one, fell to his opponent 6-4 and 6-2. Haffner, No. four singles, fell 6-2 and 6-3. Ruaud, No. five, fell 7-5 and 7-5.

The deciding match for the Kingsmen victory was in the hands of Volk, No. three singles, who received a victory 7-5, 7-6 (6). 

Volk said that the difference at the end of his match was that he "was being way more aggressive and being a lot smarter" to finish the victory.

Head coach Mike Gennette spoke about Volk's win, "He dug and scrapped in typical Isaiah manner."

The Cal Lutheran Kingsmen return to Poulson Tennis Courts Saturday, April 6, at 10 AM PST, to play against Redlands.
