COMMERCE, Calif.— The Cal Lutheran women's swimming and diving team sits in seventh after day one of the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Championships.
The Regals are hosting the championships which are being held at the Brenda Villa Aquatic Center Thursday through Sunday. Day one consisted of two relay races, the 200-yard medley and the 800-yard freestyle.
The veteran swimmers all improved from last year," said head coach Barry Schreifels. "The women just missed the team record in the medley relay, and had great splits. The team is hunting for results that will get them to nationals. It's been the focus all year long in practice."
The top performance of the day came in the 800-yard free as Avery Conrad, Kyrie Fairbairn, McKenzie Kelly and Emily Sharpe combined for a sixth place finish with a time of eight minutes and 4.64 seconds.
The first race of the day was close to a program record as Brianna Baldwin, Conrad, Glass and Brieyana Walton clocked a 1:51.39 in the 200-yard medley. The top mark is 1:50.17 and was set at the 2019 SCIAC Championships.
The relays consisted of A and B races as each school had a team in both. Finishing 14th in the 200-yard medley was Aubrey Blickman, Jaclyn Holtz, Kelly and Ivana Reyes as they recorded a time of 1:58.39. Rounding out the first night was Holtz, Eve Miyagishima, Madisyn Morin and Reyes with a time of 8:48.63 in the 800-yard free as they placed 16th.
Day two starts at 9 a.m. and consists of prelims for the 500 freestyle, 200 individual medley, 50 free, 200 free (optional) and time trials. The finals for the same events start at 5 p.m. with the 200 free relay starting approximately at 6:45. For more information and the full schedule, go to TheSCIAC.org
