Curtin Wins Pole Vault at SCIAC Championships; Johnson, MacKinnon Add All-SCIAC Honors

LA VERNE, Calif. — Cooper Curtin won the pole vault, and Danny Johnson and Jake MacKinnon added All-Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) honors in the high jump and hammer throw, respectively, to lead Cal Lutheran men's track & field at the SCIAC Championships on Saturday and Sunday. The Kingsmen finished seventh with 30 points. 

After placing third last year, Curtin was a mission to make it to the top of the podium. He did just that as he cleared 4.81 meters. He is currently ninth in the nation with a mark of 4.90. 

Johnson and MacKinnon both placed third in their respective events. Johnson competed in the high jump and placed third as he cleared 1.77 meters for his first All-SCIAC award. MacKinnon also placed third and did so in the hammer. He had a throw of 43.98 meters and picked up his second All-SCIAC honor. 

MacKinnon and the Kingsmen added four more top-10 finishes. MacKinnon placed sixth in the discus and shot put with 37.44m and 13.05m, respectively. The 1600 relay team of Chris Meyer, Johnson, Max Segeberg, and Mateo Handall placed seventh with a time of three minutes and 26.38 seconds. Johnson turned in a second top-10 finish as he placed 10thin the pole vault with a mark of 3.21m. That mark was a seven-second seasonal best. 

In the finals of distance and field events, the Kingsmen placed top-20, 12 more times. Sebastian Sawyer was 11th in the 3000m steeplechase (9:55.62), Darrin Parham was 12th in the triple jump (12.19m), Johnson was 13th in the long jump (5.98m), Jonathan Aguilar was 14th in the 10000 run (33:29.06), Parham was 14th in the long jump (5.84m), Leroy Stoneham Jr. was 14th in the hammer (35.77m), Moises Velasquez was 14th in the triple jump (11.34m), Logan Bury was 15th in the 3000m steeplechase (10:23.73), Stoneham Jr. was 17th in the triple jump (10.88m), Eric Talbert was 18th in the 5000 run (15:59.09), Noah Gargano was 19th in the hammer (31.33m) and Xavier Reynoso was 19th in the 3000m steeplechase (10:23.73). Stoneham Jr.'s marks in the hammer and triple jump were both personal bests. 

The Kingsmen had many more competitors competing in eight different events. Handall was 14th in the prelims of the 400 dash (51.98), Meyer was 16th in the prelims of the 400 dash (52.04m),  Talbert was 18th in the prelims of the 1500 run (4:12.48), Meyer was 19th in the prelims of the 200 dash (23.25), Jacob Whitmore was 21st in the long jump (5.56m), Handall was 23rd in the prelims of the 200 dash (23.40), Johnson was 23rd in the prelims of the 100 dash (11.54), Segeberg was 23rd in the prelims of the 800 run (2:06.19), Velasquez was 23rd in the long jump (5.51m), Bryan Bugni was 24th in the long jump (5.21m), Jonathan Aguilar was 25th in the 5000 run (16:07.07), Matthew Crellin was 27th in the prelims of the 400 dash (54.60), Gargano was 27th in the shot put (8.80m), George Gaitanis was 31st in the prelims of the 1500 run (4:38.02), Bugni was 34th in the prelims of the 100 dash (12.25), Ian Skrinde was 30th in the prelims of the 800 run (2:40.41), and Crellin was 37th in the prelims of the 200 dash (26.26). Aguilar's 10k time was a personal best.

The Kingsmen continue the season with the Occidental Invite on Saturday at 11 a.m.
