Curtin Sets Pole Vault Program Record; Kingsmen Make Podium in Six Events

LOS ANGELES — Cooper Curtin set the program record in the pole vault and Cal Lutheran men's track & field made the podium in six events as they competed at the Mt. Sac Relays on Friday and the SCIAC #3 on Saturday.

Cooper set the program record in the pole vault at the Mt. Sac Relays. He cleared 4.90 meters and placed third. He beat athletes from Division I programs such as Oregon, California, Michigan, Arizona State, Virginia Tech, Arizona, and Georgia.  

At the SCIAC #3, the Kingsmen fell to Chapman, Occidental, Pomona-Pitzer, and Redlands. Jake MacKinnon had the lone win on the day and took the hammer throw. He recorded a toss of 46.79 meters.

Curtin and MacKinnon were also runner-up in an event. Curtin cleared a height of 4.65m in the pole vault and MacKinnon had a distance of 13.55m in the shot put. MacKinnon and Sebastian Sawyer took third in an event. MacKinnon recorded a throw of 36.70m in the discus and Sawyer raced a time of nine minutes and 53.62 seconds in the 3000 meter steeplechase. The 4x100 relay team placed fifth and set a seasonal best. Henry Mendoza, Danny Johnson, Mateo Handall, and Chris Meyer combined for a time of 44.55. 

The Kingsmen were top-10 in eight more events. Handall was sixth in the 400 dash (51.16), Johnson was sixth in high jump (1.62m), Meyer was sixth in the 200 dash (22.63), the 4x400 relay of Mendoza, Max Segeberg, Meyer, and Handall were seventh (3:38.87), Eric Talbert was eight in the 1500 run (4:14.00), Johnson was ninth in long jump (5.67m) and triple jump (11.44m), and Segeberg was 10th in the 800 run (2:04.08). 

The Kingsmen competed in two more events. The top finisher was Sawyer in the 400 hurdles (12th, 1:07.08) and Johnson in the 100 dash (14th, 11.70). Jonathan Aguilar and Logan Bury also competed and both set a personal best in the 1500 run. 

The SCIAC Championships are up next. The Kingsmen are at La Verne on April 29-30. The start time for Saturday is 1:30 p.m. with 10 a.m. set for Sunday.
