PASADENA, Calif. — Cal Lutheran men's track and field set 13 personal bests as they competed at the SCIAC #1 on Saturday. The Kingsmen defeated Caltech 77-71, but fell to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 131-25.
Cooper Curtin led the way with a win. He took the pole vault as he cleared a height of 4.60 meters.
Mateo Handall and Jake MacKinnon both turned in a runner-up finish. Handall took silver in the 400 dash with 51.92 and MacKinnon was second in the hammer with 43.69m.
The Kingsmen turned in three more podium finishes. In the 4x100 relay, Handall ran the anchor leg as Cal Lutheran came from behind to win the race and ultimately defeated Caltech. On top of Handall, the team included Lucas Weaver, Henry Mendoza, and Chris Meyer as they crossed the finish line with 44.57. The 4x400 relay team of Meyer, Max Segeberg, Mendoza and Handall took bronze with 3:33.76 and Danny Johnson did the same in the high jump with 1.70m.
Cal Lutheran had four more top-five marks. Logan Bury impressed in the 3000 meter steeplechase as he finished in 10:10.56. Noah Gargano just missed the podium for the javelin and recorded a throw of 20.80m. MacKinnon was top-four in all three of his events. He had a mark of 12.78m in the shot put and 36.48m in the discus.
The Kingsmen competed in seven more events with the top finisher being Darrin Parham in the triple jump (sixth, 11.87m), Xavier Reynoso in 400 hurdles (sixth, 1:13.96), Johnson in the long jump (seventh, 5.90m), Eric Talbert in the 1500 run (seventh, 4:07.36), Johnson in the 100 dash (ninth, 11.74), Handall in the 200 dash (11th, 23.84), and Max Segeberg in the 800 run (13th, 2:04.53).
Notable personal bests include MacKinnon in the hammer, Talbert and Ian Skrinde in the 1500 run, and Bury in steeplechase by a huge margin of 28 seconds.
Up next for the Kingsmen is the Oxy Distance Carnival/Spring Break Classic on March 11th. The meet is set to start at 9 a.m.
