LOS ANGELES — Eric Talbert cracked the top-10 list for the 5000 meter run and Jake MacKinnon was runner-up in the hammer, and placed fourth in two more events, to lead Cal Lutheran men's track & field at the Oxy Distance Carnival & Spring Break Classic on Saturday.
Talbert recorded the eight fastest time in program history for the 5000m run and was the first person to crack the top-10 list since 2014. He set a personal best, with 15 minutes and 18.41 seconds, 33 seconds faster than his personal best.
MacKinnon took silver in the hammer as he recorded a throw of 44.75 meters. He was fourth in the discus and shot put with 37.87m and 12.69m, respectively.
Danny Johnson and Sebastian Sawyer both turned in a top-10 performance. Johnson made it four Kingsmen in the top-five as he tied for fifth in the high jump with 1.65m. Sawyer added a sixth-place performance. In the 3000m steeplechase, he crossed the finish line in nine minutes and 52.56 seconds.
The Kingsmen competed in seven more events. The top finisher in each event was Johnson in the triple jump (11th, 11.71m), long jump (12th, 5.52m), and 100 meter dash (21st, 11.56), Mateo Handall in the 400m dash (24th, 52.42), Max Segeberg in the 800m run (41st, 2:01.18), Talbert in the 5000m run (77th, 15:18.41), and Alexander Conn in the 1500m run (81st, 4:21.54).
Cal Lutheran had eight personal bests on the day. Jonathan Aguilar (5000m run, 16:05.61), Logan Bury (5000m run, 16:06.75), Conn (1500m run), Johnson (100m dash), MacKinnon (hammer), Talbert (5000m run), Max Segeberg (800m run), and Moises Velasquez (long jump, 5.44m) all had a personal best.
The Kingsmen have a week off before getting back into competition. On Saturday, March 25, Cal Lutheran will compete at the Westmont Classic.
