COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Cal Lutheran seniors Kayla Cross and Maddy Griess were named 2020 All-American Athlete of the Year recipients as announced by the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA).
The All-American Strength and Conditioning Athlete of the Year Award program recognizes collegiate and high school athletes whose athletic accomplishments reflect their dedication to strength training and conditioning.
Cross is a member of the women's track and field team while Griess was on the women's soccer team. Both were huge pieces for their team's success over the past four years.
"Kayla's consistency, care, determination, work ethic, persistence and unmatched commitment to physical preparation over the past four years has enabled great athletic success despite a tremendous academic load," said Cal Lutheran Senior Director of Strength and Conditioning/Athletic Performance Patrick Holmberg. "She is a gifted and hard-working student who will pursue a PhD in Microbiology next year. Indeed, Kayla is the epitome of a student-athlete and, genuinely, a true joy to coach.
"Maddy is one of the hardest working, committed, perseverant and most well-respected student-athletes with whom I've had the privilege to work. The Regals soccer team's unparalleled success during her four years is due (in part) to her tremendous leadership, care, and work ethic. These intangible qualities will undoubtedly enable Maddy to succeed in whatever path she pursues upon graduation.
