Hazlett, Rond, Gardhouse Named SCIAC Athletes of the Week

ALISO VIEJO, Calif. —  Three Cal Lutheran student-athletes received SCIAC Athlete of the Week honors for their impressive performances over the past week of competition.

Tyler Hazlett (Arcadia, Calif.) of Kingsmen baseball was named SCIAC Pitcher of the Week after delivering three fantastic outings out of the bullpen. In two innings of work in Cal Lutheran's 16-4 win over Centenary (La.), Hazlett punched out one hitter and surrendered just one hit to earn his first win in the Purple and Gold. The right-hander made two relief outings in a pair of 8-3 victories over No. 1 Chapman. Hazlett tossed 2.2 scoreless innings over the two contests, scattering three hits.

The duo of Kaitlin Gardhouse and Lexi Rond swept the SCIAC Women's Water Polo Athlete of the Week awards after leading the Regals to a 4-1 week. With the Regals hosting their annual Tina Finali Memorial Tournament, they knocked off Division I opponent, Long Island (11-10) and D-II Fresno Pacific (16-11). CLU opened conference play with a 12-11 win against Chapman and had a 10-6 win against Lindenwood.

Gardhouse (Agoura Hills, Calif.) garnered her first award as she was named the Defensive Athlete of the Week. She tallied two or more steals in three games, but her strongest defensive outing came in the conference opener as she shut down Chapman with four steals. During that same game, she tallied three goals, two assists and four drawn ejections. She added three steals in the one-point win against Long Island and had two more against Fresno Pacific. The utility player was all over the pool as she accounted for six goals, seven assists, 10 steals and 11 drawn ejections.

Rond (Oxnard, Calif.) earned the Offensive Athlete of the Week for the second time in her career. The sophomore led the Regals with five goals, including the Purple and Gold's final four points, with the finishing touch being a game winner as CLU defeated Chapman to start the tournament. Against Indiana, the center impressed with five goals, on just six shots, and added two drawn exclusions. She then added a hat trick and three drawn ejections against Long Island. For the week, Rond tallied 17 goals, 11 drawn ejections, one assist and three steals.
