REDLANDS, Calif. — Sarah Bjornson, Samira Negrete, and Zaria Opara all won an event to lead Cal Lutheran women's track & field at the SCIAC Multi-Dual #2 on Saturday afternoon. The Regals defeated La Verne, but lost to Whittier.
Bjornson won gold as she took the high jump, clearing 1.55 meters. Negrete made it to the top of the podium as she raced to a first-place finish in the 1500 meter run with five minutes and 9.91 seconds. Opara made it three Regals with a gold as she won the hammer throw with a heave of 46.45 meters. Her mark also made the top-10 list and she sits fourth.
The Regals added four runner-up finishes as Fatima Cervantes, Opara (twice) and Cheyanne Rodriguez all took silver. Cervantes cleared a height of 1.50m in the high jump, Opara recorded throws of 12.00m in the shot put and 40.55m in the discus, and Rodriguez had a mark of 29.33m in the javelin.
Cora Hautekeete, Negrete, and the 1600 relay team took bronze in their respective events. Hautekeete raced to a time of 13:01.16 in the 3000 steeplechase and Negrete recorded a time of 2:27.92. The team of Cervantes, Hautekeete, Brooke Hougo, and Negrete combined for a time of 4:23.35 in the 1600 relay.
The Regals also competed in six more events. The top finisher in each event was Bjornson in the pole vault (fourth, 2.60m), Cervantes in the 400 hurdles (fifth, 1:10.70) and the triple jump (seventh, 9.53m), and Niora Abraham in the 200 dash (12th, 34.32), the long jump (12th, 3.57m), and the 100 dash (14th, 15.63).
The Regals and Kingsmen showed out at the Multi-Dual #2 and combined for 28 personal bests.
The Regals continue the season with the Pomona-Pitzer All-Comers. The meet is set for Saturday at 9 a.m.
