Opara Wins Discus, Second Place in Two Events at Oxy Distance Carnival & Spring Break Classic

LOS ANGELES — Zaria Opara won the discus, and placed second in two more events, to lead Cal Lutheran Women's Track & Field at the Oxy Distance Carnival & Spring Break Classic on Saturday.

Opara dominated the three events she competed in. She won the discus with 38.78 meters and took silver in the shot put and hammer with 10.65m and 44.12m, respectively. 

Sarah Bjornson made the podium and took third-place in the high jump. She recorded a distance of 1.45m. Bjornson and Jodie Oparanaku both recorded a fourth-place finish. Bjornson cleared a height of 3.05m in the pole vault and Oparanaku clocked a time of 18.59 seconds. 

The Regals turned in three more top-10 performances. Brooke Hougo was eighth in the 3000m steeplechase with 12:52.58, Fatima Cervantes was ninth in the triple jump with 9.43m, and Cheyanne Rodriguez was ninth in the javelin with 26.89m. 

The Regals competed in two more events. The top finisher in each event was Jasmyne Holliday in the 100m dash (12th, 13.00) and Cora Hautekeete in the 1500m run (60th, 5:24.86). 

Cal Lutheran had five Regals recorded personal bests. Dinkenesh Coltvet (1500m, 6:03.94), Hougo (steeplechase), Taylor Kemp (hammer, 34.33m), and Sadie Rico (hammer, 30.53m & discus, 26.60m) all recorded a personal best. 

The Regals have a week off before getting back into competition. On Saturday, March 25, Cal Lutheran will compete at the Westmont Classic.
