Negrete, Opara Win an Event at Moorpark College Open

MOORPARK, Calif. — Samira Negrete and Zaria Opara both won an event to lead Cal Lutheran women's track & field at the Moorpark College Open on Friday afternoon. 

It was the first meet of the year for the Regals. Negrete won the 1500 meter run with five minutes and 9.25 seconds and Opara claimed the shot put with 11.32 meters. Opara's throw improved her 10th all-time mark.

Sarah Bjornson, Cheyanne Rodriguez and Opara (twice) were a runner-up in their respective event. Bjornson was second in the high jump as she cleared 1.45m, Rodriguez was second in the javelin with 29.21m and Opara was second in the hammer throw with 46.32m and the discus with 40.42m.

The Regals took third in one more event. Fatima Cervantes and Jodie Oparanaku tied for third in the 300 meter hurdles with 56.29. 

Cal Lutherna placed top-five in four more events. Oparanaku was fourth in the 60 meter hurdles with 12.08, Bjornson was fifth in the pole vault with 2.50m, Cervantes was fifth in the triple jump with 9.20m and Cora Hautekeete was fifth in the 3000 meter run with 12:26.84.

Also competing for the Regals and placing the highest in their event was Xthlali Nunez in the 300 meter dash (sixth, 50.30), Oparanaku in the long jump (seventh, 4.21m) and Niora Abraham in the 60 meter dash (10.14).

The Regals are back in action on Feb. 18th at the Pomona-Pitzer All-Comers. The meet starts at 10:30 a.m.
