Kingsmen Set for Marshall, Texas Regional; NCAA Tournament Starts May 19

MARSHALL, Texas — Cal Lutheran baseball won the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) tournament crown for the second straight year and earned the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Championship.

The Kingsmen head to East Texas Baptist for a four-team regional and joining them is Pacific (Ore.) and Trinity (Tx.). The regional starts on Friday, double-elimination style. Cal Lutheran's first game is at 9 am PST. Tickets are $15 for adults, $10 for seniors and students, and ages five and under are free. Cash and card will be accepted.

The Kingsmen are in the NCAA tournament in back-to-back seasons for the first time in 2016 and '17. They also did so in '13 and '14. Cal Lutheran made 11 straight appearances from 1992-2001. With one more playoff run in 2009, this makes it 17 times for the program.

A Look at the Teams

Cal Lutheran
The Kingsmen won their sixth Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Tournament Championship and are in the NCAA Championship for the 17th time. In the three tournament games, the Kingsmen pitching staff allowed just 29 hits, with only three walks, three hit by pitch, and nine earned runs. They had a 3.00 earned run average and 16 strikeouts. 

All three starting pitchers have at least six wins and the offense has hit 35 home runs. Chris Torres has seven wins and John Frazier and Luke Wechsler have six each. Relievers Clay Rickerman has three wins and eight saves.

Sean Blandino, Brendan Durfee, and Kyle Reuser have five home runs each and Jalen Parks and Joseph Scalzo have four each. Durfee has 35 RBI, Max Heverly is next with 34, Reuser has 31 and Josh Quinn has 27. Zach Lafata has an average of .346 and four more starters hit over .300. 

East Texas Baptist
The Tigers won their first-ever American Southwest Conference Baseball Tournament Championship. ETBU came out of the loser's bracket and won five straight games to claim the championship. There 35 wins are third best this season behind Johns Hopkins (39) and Shenandoah (36). 

Sayers Collins has pitched four complete games with a record of 10-2. Five different pitchers have three or more wins with Hayden Robichaux with six and Cole Godkin has five. 

Brett Wagner has a team-high 60 RBI and Ben Lea is next with 52. Four more Tigers have 40-plus RBI. Lea leads the team with 22 home runs and Wagner and Jase Jones have 13 and 11, respectively. 

Pacific (Ore.)
The Boxers fell in the Northwest Conference Tournament Championship to Lewis & Clark. Pitcher Will Clark has seven wins and Kahi Bisho was 4-0. 

Tyler Quinn leads the way with a .429 batting average and six more Boxers hit over .327. Isaac Lovings has 56 RBI, CJ Colyer is next with 48 and Andrew Thomas adds 47. The trio also hit double-digit home runs each with Lovings having 18. 

Trinity (Tx.)
The Tigers won their 13th overall Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) Championship by defeating Texas Lutheran University.

The pitching duo of Jackson Teer and Cade McGahan has combined for 15 wins and just two losses. Jack Martinez is a key reliever with four wins and six saves. 

Five Tigers have 20-plus RBI led by Ezra Gore with 28 RBI. Jack Peterson is next with 25 RBI, Michael Montrezza has 23, and Christian Holloway has 21.
