Kingsmen Held In Check Against La Verne

LA VERNE, Calif. — Cal Lutheran baseball was held in check on Saturday afternoon as they were defeated by La Verne twice. The Leopards took the first game, 7-1, and the second, 7-3.

Game One
Luke Wechsler got the call in game one and pitched 5.2 innings. He struck out seven, but gave up seven hits and four earned runs. Dean Olsson was next and gave up three hits and one earned run over 1.1 innings. Gregory Pimentel finished off the game and pitched a clean eighth.

It was a quiet game until the third inning when the Leopards broke through for the first run. The La Verne pitcher continued to cruise and kept the Kingsmen quiet. La Verne added four runs in the sixth and one in the seventh. 

The Kingsmen got on the board in the eight as Josh Quinn hit a sacrifice fly, scoring Joseph Scalzo. The Leopards got the run back in the bottom of the inning and went onto win the game. 

Game Two
John Frazier took to the mound to try and salvage the series. He went 6.2 innings and only gave up four hits and two earned runs. Bryan Tierney was next, but did not record an out, but allowed two hits and three earned runs. Max Kendall pitched the last 1.1 innings and only allowed four hits. 

Ryan Farr and Griffin Zitko led the offense with a double each. Zitko had the lone RBI. La Verne scored one in the first and the Kingsmen tied it up in the sixth. La Verne got the lead back in the bottom of the inning, going up 3-1. The Kingsmen fired right back in the seventh and tied the game at 3-3, but the Leopards scored four in the bottom. It was the space La Verne needed as they swept the Kingsmen. 

The Kingsmen return to action on Friday. Cal Lutheran is at Pomona-Pitzer at 3 p.m.
