Regals Honor Seniors, Start Strong in Loss to Occidental

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – California Lutheran University women's lacrosse hosted the program's first ever Senior Night game on Wednesday evening.

The Regals celebrated the careers of their graduating class Sloan Sanders, Skylar Purvis, Sirena Borja, Malia Byun, and Cameron Mendez.

In the game, the Regals were hosting SCIAC opponents the Tigers of Occidental College. This was the second in the season series. Occidental won the initial encounter.

The Regals took the momentum from honoring their seniors into the opening quarter, applying pressure and getting the first free position attempt of the game.

The Tigers were able to score two goals before Cal Lutheran cut the lead in half on a free position goal from Giselle Bonilla, her 13th of the season.

The second quarter saw the scoring increase as the Tigers were able to add 7 goals to their total. The Regals added to their total as well when Malina Diaz beat the Occidental goalie with a stick side shot for her third goal of the season. With that, the half ended 9-2 in favor of Occidental.

Heading into the second half with the lead, Occidental was able to score the 3 goals they needed to reach a running clock for the rest of the game. After that they score another 4 in the quarter to end at 16-2.

Occidental scored first in the fourth. Then Arielle Esparza scored her 2nd goal of the season to make the score 17-3.

Another two goals for the Tigers brought the game to its conclusion at 19-3

The Regals will be on the road for their final matchup of the season on Saturday at 11:00am against Redlands.
