Regals Get More Firsts, Records in Loss to Whittier

WHITTIER, Calif. – California Lutheran University women's lacrosse began their second round of conference play with a road match against the University of Whittier Poets. In another game of firsts for Cal Lutheran players the Regals were unable to match the Poets who took the win 20-3.

The defenses held for almost 5 minutes before the first goal was scored. While down a player thanks to a card, the Poets broke the ice with the first goal. From there Whittier went on to score 5 more to end the first quarter up 6-0.

The second quarter was the highest scoring as the Poets controlled the period and scored 8 goals. The first half ended with the Poets leading 14-0.

The second half began with 2 more goals for Whittier. That is when Giselle Bonilla scored her team leading 11th goal of the season for the Regals. That was followed by junior Skylar Purvis scoring the first goal of her career. The Poets added one more in the quarter to reach a 17-2 score.

Whittier added 3 goals in the fourth quarter before senior Sloan Sanders scored her second goal of the season to end the game with the final score of 20-3.

Cal Lutheran had a program record 24 ground balls led by Malina Diaz who had 4 and 3 each for Arielle Esparza, Sloan Sanders, Skylar Purvis, and Kaitlin Gill.

The goal keeping duties for the Regals were split between Mia Deck who had 4 saves and Hannah Mosesian who had 5 saves in her debut in goal.

The Regals will be back home in William Rolland Stadium Saturday at 1pm to take on Chapman.
