Perry Ties for Fifth, Kingsmen 10th in First Spring Event

VISTA, Calif. — Freshman Jeffrey Perry tied for fifth, firing a 3-over-par 219, as the Cal Lutheran men's golf team took on top-notch competition on Monday and Tuesday for the CSUSM Fujikura Invitational at Shadowridge Country Club. 

The tournament included Division I, San Diego St., and 11 Division II schools. The golfers shot 36 rounds on day one and the final 18 on day two. The event featured 16 teams and 87 individuals. 

Perry continued his impressive freshman season as he was the top Division III finisher at the tournament. Perry shot a 73 in each round, recording the fourth-most birdies with 11 and added 34 Pars. On Par 4 and Par 5 holes, Perry finished in top-10 for scoring average with 4.00 and 4.75, respectively. In the fall tournaments, he tied for first and tied for seventh.

Freshmen went 1-and-2 for the Purple and Gold as Zac Stout was the next Kingsmen and tied for 32nd. He shot a 76 over the first two rounds and ended his tournament with a 75. He tied for 17thin scoring average on Par 4s, shooting 4.17. He recorded the most Pars for the Kingsmen and tied for ninth at the tournament with 35. 

Junior Ryan Kyaw and freshman Derek Hahn round out the team scored with 16-over-par 19-over-par, respectively. Kyaw tied for 47th, shooting a 74, 77 and 81, for a total of 232 strokes. Hahn recorded a 79, 80 and 76, to tie for 61st with 235 strokes.

Senior Stefan Nelson also competed for the Kingsmen and tied for 67th. He finished with 77 strokes in the first round, 78 in the second and 83 in the third for a score of 22-over-par and 238.

As a team, Cal Lutheran finished in 10th-place at 45-over-par. The Kingsmen shot 909 strokes (300-304-305), but dropped four spots over the final round. The Purple and Gold competed and were just 21 strokes back of the champion. Winning the tournament was UC San Diego with a 24-over-par 888 (292-294-302). Oklahoma Christian U (298-287-305-890) and Cal State San Marcos (305-292-293-890) tied for second at 26-over-par. 

The Kingsmen have almost a month off before getting back on the course for a conference event. The first leg of the SCIAC Championships, SCIAC #1, is February 29 through March 1 in Beaumont, Calif., at the Morongo G.C.
