Ferreira Scores 22 in Loss to Panthers

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — The Cal Lutheran men's basketball team fought hard, but the Chapman Panthers used a late run as they outlasted the Kingsmen 67-60 on Wednesday night.

Cal Lutheran was looking for its third-straight win, but came up just short as the Kingsmen fell to 5-12 and 3-6 in Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC). Chapman improved to 8-10 and 4-5 in the SCIAC.

The Kingsmen got off to a slow start as the Panthers scored the first 10 points of the game. After a few more plays, Chapman had their biggest lead of the game at 17-4 with 13:02 left in the half. CLU slowly chipped away at the lead and went on a 20-9 run over the next 11 minutes. The scoring came from all over the court as five different Kingsmen scored during the run to make it 26-24. It was just a one-possession game at the half as Chapman held a 29-26 advantage.

Cal Lutheran kept the second half close and cut the lead to 37-35 after an Austin Cole layup. Chapman increased its lead to as big as nine before CLU answered back. Cal Lutheran cut the lead to six, twice, with just under eight minutes. Kyle Ferreira's three-pointer made it 53-47 with 7:26 left in the game. The Kingsmen were able to cut the lead to six once more as Caleb Thomas hit a jumper to make it 64-58 with 39 seconds left. That was as close as CLU would get as Chapman made their free throws down the stretch and won 67-60.

Ferreira had a team-high 22 points. He has scored 20-plus points eight times this year. He is 17 points shy of scoring 1,000-career points at Cal Lutheran. He also led the team with seven rebounds and four assists.

Cole scored 12 points and Thomas was next with a season-high 10 points. Cole tallied five rebounds and three assists.

Tyler Brabant scored six points. He added four rebounds and a game-high two blocks. Jarrett Powers came off the bench to dish out three assists.

The game came down to the free throw line at the end. Chapman was 16-18 on free throws. They made five straight over the final minute before missing their final two. CLU was 9-11 from the line.

Cal Lutheran looks to bounce back on Saturday. The Kingsmen welcome UC Santa Cruz for a non-conference matchup with the tipoff set for 2 p.m. in Gilbert Arena.
