Cole Scores 1,000th-Career Point; Kingsmen Fall to Panthers

ORANGE, Calif.—Cal Lutheran's Austin Cole scored his 1,000th-career point, but it was spoiled as the Kingsmen were defeated by the Chapman Panthers 87-71 Wednesday night.

Cole was at 997 points before the game, and put up 17 on the night. He became the 26th Kingsmen to score 1,000-career points. He is also the first member since 2012.

The Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) opened play tonight on the men's side. The Kingsmen dropped to 2-3 overall and 0-1 in conference. Chapman is now 4-2 and 1-0.

Kyle Ferreira led Cal Lutheran with 21 points. He hit three three-pointers on the night and was 6-of-7 from the charity stripe. He added a team-high four assists and also had four rebounds.

Cole was second on the team with his 17 points. He had an efficient night and was 8-of-14 from the field. He added six rebounds.

Tyler Brabant recorded his first career double-double. He tallied career-highs as he scored 13 points and grabbed 11 rebounds.

Jared Wulbrun was one-point shy of double-digits as he scored nine. All of his points came off three-pointers. Max Modica came off the bench and scored his first collegiate bucket and added two assists.

Chapman started the game hot and took a 22-13 lead 10 minutes into the first half. The Kingsmen went on a 7-0 run to get back into the game behind a three-pointer from Ferreira and two buckets from Michael Wadsworth and Brabant. The Panthers opened back up the lead over the final five minutes and had a 42-31 lead at the half.

In the second half, the Kingsmen were able to cut the lead to single-digits multiple times. The closest CLU got was 55-51 with 13:05 left in the game. Cal Lutheran used a 6-0 run with a dunk by Brabant and two layups from Palmer Chaplin and Ferreira. Chapman wouldn't let the Kingsmen get any closer and took control the rest of the way as the Panthers won 87-69.

The Kingsmen have a short break and then play non-conference opponents before jumping back into SCIAC play. Cal Lutheran is home for the first time this season on Thursday, Dec. 20, as they welcome Pacific to Gilbert Arena.
