Cole Scores 25, Brabant Records Second Career Double-Double Against Poets

WHITTIER, Calif. Tyler Brabant tallied his second career double-double in Cal Lutheran's season finale with 20 points and 10 rebounds, but the Kingsmen fell to the Whittier Poets 93-66 on Tuesday night.

The game wrapped up the regular season for the Kingsmen and Poets as both fell short of the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) playoffs. CLU ended its 2019 campaign with a record of 7-18 and 5-11 in conference play.

Brabant recorded his career-high in points and free throws made with 20 and 11, respectively. He was 11-of-12 from the free throw line for a percentage of 91.7 while also shooting 50-percent from the field.

Austin Cole, Kyle Ferreira and Michael Wadsworth all played in their last game wearing Violet and Gold. Cole scored a game-high 25 points and it is the fifth time this year he has eclipsed that point total. Ferreira was big on the glass and pulled down a team-high 12 rebounds. He grabbed 10-plus rebounds for the seventh time this year and averaged 7.9 rebounds per game.

The Kingsmen moved the ball around well and totaled 11 assists as a team. Palmer Chaplin, Cole, Ferreira and Jarrett Powers all tallied two assists each. Defensively, Powers recorded a season and game-high four assists.

The great individual performances from many Kingsmen were thwarted due to a poor shooting night. Cal Lutheran was 22-of-66 from the field (33.3%) and 6-of-27 (22.2%) from three-point range. The transition game also hurt the Kingsmen as they could only score six points off turnovers, but allowed the Poets to score 25.

Cal Lutheran's shooting woes happened early in the game as Whittier was able to take a 15-6 lead. The Kingsmen were 8-of-30 from the field and 1-of-12 from three as the Poets cruised to a big lead in the first half which allowed them to take the momentum and a 45-28 lead into the half.

CLU fought back and would cut the lead to 12 after a Cole three-pointer with 15:41 left in the game. With the Kingsmen trailing 50-38, Whittier went on a 19-8 run and took a 20-point lead with 8:53 left. The Poets didn't look back as they won the game 93-66.
