PASADENA, Calif. — Kyle Ferreira scored a career-high 32 points, and Cal Lutheran had their best shooting night of the season from three-point range and the free throw line, as they took down Caltech 95-74 on Wednesday night.
The Kingsmen (6-13, 4-6 SCIAC) shot 10-17 (58.8-percent) from three and 19-22 (86.4) from the free throw line as they recorded their best percentages on the year. They had their second-best shooting night from the field and were 33-57 for a percentage of 57.9.
Ferreira was 12-17 from the field and 5-8 from three as he recorded his most efficient night of the season. He bested his career-high by two points. He scored 30 earlier this year against Pacific. He pulled down seven rebounds and had team-high two steals.
Ferreira is tied for fourth in the SCIAC in points per game with 18.7. He averages the fourth-most rebounds in the league at 7.4. He is the only player in the SCIAC to be in the top-five for both categories.
Austin Cole was next with 24 points. He shot 50-percent from the field and knocked down two three pointers. He tallied a team-high eight rebounds and added two assists.
Tyler Brabant scored double-digits for the fourth time this year and had 12 points. He was 6-6 from the free throw line. He recorded seven rebounds.
Jarrett Powers saw his first start of the season and his career. He made the most of his opportunity and dished out 10 assists. The most assists he had in any game before was just four. He is only the second Kingsmen to record double-digit assists this year.
Palmer Chaplin and Caleb Thomas combined for 17 points off the bench. Chaplin scored nine and had seven rebounds while Thomas added eight points.
The first eight minutes of the game saw three ties and two lead changes as the teams exchanged baskets. With Cal Lutheran down 13-12, Ferreira scored eight straights points which included back-to-back three-pointers to give the Kingsmen a lead. His second three-pointer was deep as he was looking to catch fire. Ferreira received the ball just past the center logo and he pulled up and drained the shot.
Cal Lutheran increased its lead throughout the rest of the half as Brabant, Chaplin, Cole, Thomas and Jared Wulbrun all scored for the Kingsmen. CLU held a double-digit lead at the half and were up 44-32 over the Beavers.
In the second half, the Kingsmen matched their biggest lead of 15, which they had previously done in the first half. Cal Lutheran was up by 15 three times in the second half. They continued their hot shooting night and were up 69-54 with 7:18 left in the game.
With the Kingsmen 78-69, they scored 15 straight points and had their biggest lead of the game at 93-69. Cole and Ferreira scored 10 of the 15 points to put the finishing touches on the game. Cal Lutheran won the game 95-74 and swept Caltech on the year.
Cal Lutheran looks to continue its ascent in the SCIAC standings as the Kingsmen host Occidental Saturday at 7 p.m. CLU looks for the upset over the Tigers, who currently sit third in the conference.
