De Souza, Opara Named SCIAC Athlete of the Week

ALISO VIEJO, Calif. — California Lutheran University student-athletes Izzy De Souza and Zaria Opara were selected Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Athlete of the Week, the conference announced Monday morning. 

De Souza earned Women's Water Polo Defensive Athlete of the Week award honor while Opara garnered the Women's Field Athlete of the Week for track & field. It is the fourth straight week water polo has earned a weekly award.  

De Souza (Irvine, Calif.) earned her third Athlete of the Week award. She made 27 saves at an impressive .500 clip against tough competition as Cal Lutheran split four games at the Claremont Convergence. She stopped 11 shots in a 9-8 overtime defeat to DI California State University, Fullerton and another eight with just four goals allowed to Augustana College.

Opara (Carnation, Wash.) was named Athlete of the Week for the fifth time in her career. She placed among the top three in each throw she contested at the SCIAC Multi-Dual #1 in Pasadena. She won the discus with a throw of 37.00 meters, was runner-up in the shot put (11.15m) and placed third in the hammer with a mark of 43.67m.
