MacKinnon, Opara, Talbert Earn SCIAC Athlete of the Week

ALISO VIEJO, Calif. — California Lutheran University student-athletes Jake MacKinnonZaria Opara and Eric Talbert was selected Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Athlete of the Week, the conference announced Monday morning. 

The trio represented the track & field teams with MacKinnon and Opara being named Field Athlete of the Week and Talbert being tabbed Track Athlete of the Week.

MacKinnon (Orcutt, Calif.) was selected Athlete of the Week for the second time in his career. The junior placed fourth in both the shot put and hammer throw while finishing 10th in the discus at the Moorpark College Open with marks just behind his best from last spring. He launched the hammer 42.87 meters (which would have ranked sixth in the SCIAC last season), put the shot 13.20 meters and hurled the discus 37.50 meters.

Opara (Carnation, Wash.) was named an Athlete of the Week for the fourth time in her career. The senior won the shot put at the Moorpark College Open and finished runner-up in both the hammer throw and discus. She posted a new personal-best in the shot put at 11.32 meters, which ranks 10th in program history, while coming up just short of her best marks as the 2022 SCIAC champion and runner-up in the hammer and discus with 46.32m and 40.42m, respectively.

Talbert (Simi Valley, Calif.) earned his first Athlete of the Week honor. The sophomore opened the season with the sixth-fastest 3000-meter run in program history as he crossed the finish line in 8:58.86.
