THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - On Saturday as part of Homecoming and Family Weekend, Cal Lutheran dedicated a statue to Bob Shoup, the school's first and longest-reigning football coach.
The bronze statue, located at University Plaza, captures the moment when players carried Shoup off the field after the Kingsmen won the NAIA Division II championship in 1971.
Shoup started the football program in 1962 and served as the head coach through 1989. He amassed 184 wins and a .662 winning percentage in his 28 seasons. The Kingsmen made five playoff appearances and won 14 NAIA District 3 titles under his guidance.
Shoup was inducted into the NAIA Hall of Fame in 2009. He is also a member of the Ventura County Sports Hall of Fame and CLU Athletic Hall of Fame. The San Marcos resident received an honorary degree from CLU in 1993.
