On opening day, David Rico was effective through the air and on the ground against No. 17 Pacific Lutheran as he was responsible for a pair of touchdowns. The first CLU drive of the game ended with a 10-yard completion from Rico for a TD as he finished 8-for-14 for 85 yards through the air with a long throw of 18 yards. He added 35 yards on the ground including a four-yard scurry across the goal line to pull CLU back even with PLU at 21-21 early in the fourth quarter. The Kingsmen nearly completed a comeback, but ultimately fell 35-28. Rico earned the start and split time under center. He did not throw an interception.
